I don’t know about you all, but cocktails are not something in my normal repertoire. If given a choice, my default is usually wine, but I do love a good, not-too-sweet cocktail, and spicy margaritas are right up there for me. Usually I rely on my boyfriend or a bartender to make them for me, but, hey, this is quarantine and the age of learning to do things yourself– with things you already have on hand. With these two handy videos, you can make these spicy margaritas with no sugar laden margarita mix or fancy muddler or shaker required!
(Makes 1 cocktail)
- 1.5 oz mezcal (1.5 oz = 1 shot 😉)
- 1/8 cup chopped fresh pineapple
- 2 thin circles of jalapeño (less seeds = less spice)
- 1/3 cup lime juice (~2 limes)
- Ice (fill your glass them a handful for shaker)
- Agave to taste
- Salt, chili powder, and a lime wedge for the glass’ rim
First, make your spicy rim! All you need is a lime wedge, salt, chili powder, and a plate or surface! And a glass of course 🙂 Run the lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip it in the salt and chili powder mix.
Next, on to the margarita! Forget fancy bartending equipment (and YES I know that baristas are for coffee not for bartending… oops). All you need is a wooden spoon and a resealable coffee thermos or water bottle. No muddler or shaker required!
Prep first. Chop your pineapple, squeeze your limes, and cut your jalapeño. Put jalapeño and pineapple in a glass (or directly into your shaker!) and muddle using a muddler or back of a wooden spoon.
Now, put the muddled jalapeño and pineapple in your “shaker” (I used a Contigo sealable thermos; you could also use a water bottle) with a handful of ice. Add your mezcal and shake for 10-15 seconds.
Pour into a glass filled with ice, add lime juice, then agave. Stir and enjoy!
This is the thermos I used. It worked as great for cocktails as it does keeping my coffee warm for my morning pre-work walks!
